Heavyweights in motion
BERTHS 10, 15–16, 25, 31–46
Pier II is the heart of general cargo handling. Metals, forest products, and project cargo are the main types of cargo handled here. The scene at Pier II is dominated above all by the handling of wind turbines. Crane systems with a lifting capacity of up to 100 metric tons ensure rapid cargo handling. And since mid-2019, the use of two new mobile harbor cranes operating in tandem has made it possible to load cargo weighing up to just under 300 metric tons here.
Furthermore, at Berth 16, two cranes are available for loading and unloading, which can be equipped with either hooks or grabs. Among other things, sheet metal and pipes for EEW Special Pipe Constructions GmbH are handled here.
Port Process - General Cargo Terminal
At Pier II, the general cargo terminal of the overseas port, cranes load and unload components for wind turbines, among other things. In addition to the general cargo terminal, crane manufacturer Liebherr also uses its production plant—located on the industrial site of Pier III, not far from the water’s edge—to ship complete mobile harbor and offshore cranes. For extreme loads of up to 1,600 metric tons, one of the world’s most powerful rail-mounted heavy-duty gantry cranes was also erected at Berth 15, and on the south side of Harbor Basin C, the loading specialists at the large-diameter pipe manufacturer EEW Special Pipe Constructions handle massive steel pipes—known as monopiles—which serve as foundations for offshore wind turbines. Heavy-load-capable quay areas and high-performance crane technology also make Germany’s largest universal port on the Baltic Sea the premier destination for heavy general cargo.

Annual statistics General Cargo 2025
Pier II is the heart of general cargo handling. Here are mainly metals, forest products and project cargo loaded. But Pier II is mainly characterized by the transshipment of wind turbines. Cranes with a lifting capacity of up to 100 tonnnes ensure the fast handling of goods. Since mid-2019, it is possible to load goods of up to almost 300 tonnes by using two mobile harbour cranes in tandem. Furthermore, there are two cranes available for loading and unloading at berth 16, which can be equipped with hooks or grapples.
Three solid sheds, each 360 meters long, with land and water-side track and road connections, are used for transhipment and storage. A total of 600,000 square meters of open storage and 120,000 square meters of covered storage for general cargo are available at the Rostock seaport.
