Rail-IT-MoS
The project, taking the form of a Motorways of the Sea (MoS) project, implements port and rail infrastructure works as well as digital solutions in Rostock and complete the large-scale Eastern port area development in Trelleborg as concerted action. Both port infrastructure managers (Trelleborgs Hamn AB and ROSTOCK PORT GmbH) will invest approx. 24 million EUR between 2023 and 2025 into necessary port infrastructure to operate the last remaining railway ferry between Sweden and Continental Europe in the future and to manage growing freight volumes of new or existing multimodal transport services to the hinterland efficiently in their ports. This project is of highest strategic relevance for a sustainable trade between Northern Europe and Continental Europe without any interruptions or technical breakdowns.
Both beneficiaries will implement and develop the following infrastructure works and digital solutions in the framework of the project:
- Providing and improving rail access to the port of Rostock through the reconstruction of the rail access system of the rail ferry berth within the administrative borders of the port of Rostock in order to ensure the operational capability of the last remaining rail ferry connection in the Baltic Sea Region
- Improvement of port handling capacity through the construction of additional port areas in the port of Rostock for handling, pre-stowage and transport purposes in the port of Rostock to deal with the increased transport demand for multimodal freight
- Adaptation of basic port infrastructure in kind of the adaptation of two Ro/Ro berths in the port of Rostock according to vessel specifics deployed as additional tonnage on the maritime links to transport additional volumes on the maritime link
- Improvement of port handling capacities through the completion of the Eastern port area in the port of Trelleborg as final step of the port relocation plan to improve operational procedures in the port and to perfectly integrate the new port areas into the TEN-T
- Digitalisation of port operations through the development of new or improvement of existing digital solutions and IT-components in the port of Rostock to respond to a growing demand for information exchange and to make port operations more efficient
