August 30, Hansa Destinations made its first departure from Nynäshamn, Sweden to Rostock, Germany. The new route provides logistic companies and other customers with a new transportation alternative that will reduce emissions by at least 20 per cent by encouraging a modal shift from road to sea.
Hansa Destinations is Rederi AB Gotland’s new ro/pax ferry line that will transport cargo as well as passengers between Nynäshamn and Rostock. With the new service, Rederi AB Gotland and Hansa Destinations will enable the modal shift of freight transport from road to sea, a more environmentally friendly freight alternative. The transfer of truck traffic to the sea route between Rostock and Nynäshamn will reduce emissions by at least 20 per cent.
- We are very excited about the launch of Hansa Destinations. When in full capacity, the new service will be able to offer more than 75,000 trucks to switch from land to sea annually, and thereby reducing transport emissions. Hansa Destinations is one of many steps we are taking to reduce emissions while offering logistic companies and other customers an additional choice of transportation, says Håkan Johansson, CEO of Rederi AB Gotland.
To celebrate the launch of Hansa Destinations, an inauguration ceremony was arranged onboard M/S Drotten in Rostock Port August 31st. In this ceremony Mr. Claus Ruhe Madsen, Mayor of Rostock, Mr. Per Thöresson, Ambassador to Germany, Mr. Christian Pegel, Minister of Energy, Infrastructure and Digitalisation Mecklenburg‐Vonpommern and Dr. Gernot Tesch, Managing Director of Rostock Port participated.
‐ Rostock is an established Ferry and RoRo‐‐Port with a wide range of services to Denmark, Sweden and Finland, which in this combination and frequency is unique for a German Baltic Sea port. The new route to Nynäshamn (and Visby) complements perfectly the existing route network and offers new opportunities to both, the transport industry and passengers. We thank Rederi AB Gotland for making Rostock even more attractive”, says Dr. Gernot Tesch, Managing Director of Rostock Port.
Hansa Destinations was awarded government funding in its start‐up phase under Sweden’s Eco‐bonus scheme, as part of efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Hansa Destinations, which will be a sister company to Destination Gotland, will also offer a new alternative for passengers who want to travel between Germany and Sweden. The sailing time will take 18 hours, and departures will be scheduled in the evening with arrivals the following day. Selected sailings will also call at Visby, on the island of Gotland.
