In early July this year the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) published the results of the 2024 call for applications under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF Transport).
The European Commission has approved a total of 94 project applications with a subsidy amount of nearly 2.8 billion Euros out of 258 applications submitted for the modernisation of railways, internal waterways and sea routes within the Trans-European Traffic Network (TEN-T). Among the approved projects is the European Maritime Space (EMS) project HARBOUR that we applied for together with the Finnish port of Hanko, which aims at extending the existing sea transport link and the port infrastructure necessary for it in close cooperation with the shipping company Finnlines in response to the growing demand in goods traffic.
During the project term from 2025 to 2027 ROSTOCK PORT will improve the handling capabilities in port by creating about 30,000 square metres of new pre-parking areas and extending the track facilities of the existing handling facility of the intermodal transport terminal to 680 metres. For this just under 14 million Euros will be invested at Rostock Overseas Port, half of which will be covered by EU subsidies.
Further expansion measures at the port are connected with the extension of the existing intermodal transport terminal in order to be able to cope with the future requirements in rail and road transhipment. „Rostock is confident that its exceptional stock of railway facilities, but also targeted measures by DB InfraGo to expand capacity at the port’s marshalling yard can contribute to the creation of sustainable transport chains and to a traffic shift from road to rail“, says Dr. Gernot Tesch, managing director of ROSTOCK PORT.
Construction work for extending the railway tracks at the intermodal transport terminal started in the spring of 2025. Apart from extending the tracks another key project is the extension of the crane track spar with track facilities for the gantry cranes. Construction is taking place alongside the normal business and will be completed next year.terminal started in the spring of 2025. „We are very glad to deepen the long-standing partnership with the port of Hanko and the shipping company Finnlines in order to increase the efficiency of the shortest sea route between Germany and Finland in a sustainable and future-oriented manner”, says ROSTOCK PORT managing director Jens A. Scharner.
